What happens when you bring together two Edmonton hospitality brands, each with a flair for the creative?
Delicious eats and cocktail magic, that’s what.
“When we talked about working with Above Average Drinks, we thought it was a great way to collaborate and showcase their drinks to our audience, who we feel would really appreciate what they’re doing,” says Christine Sandford, the Biera Executive Chef.
Above Average Drinks CEO Warren Johnston couldn’t agree more.
“The Biera team just exudes talent,” says Johnston.
“The community and passion for quality that they have cultivated is incredible – we’ve loved working together and learning from them to improve our offerings.”
Who Are Above Average Drinks?
Above Average Drinks launched in April 2020, as co-founders Warren Johnston and Pablo Herrera Cruz sought to bring better cocktail experiences to those isolating at home during the pandemic.
“We create ready-to-drink cocktails at the same level you would experience them at your favourite bars. All you have to do is chill, pour, and serve,” says Johnston.
The team rotates its offerings each month, so customers can always expect something new and exciting coming down the pike. They also offer virtual cocktail sessions and catering for large events.
“This has been particularly popular for corporate events and weddings, where everyone can raise a glass together and share an experience around our drinks safely from home,” says Johnston.

The Biera and Above Average Drinks Collab’
No industry has been affected by the pandemic as much as hospitality.
With changing regulations and fresh lock-downs, restaurants and bars have had to find ways to be nimble in the face of unpredictability.
Some spots hired their own delivery drivers while others threw together patios on the street for safe service.
Restaurants like Biera got even more creative, coming up with new ways to get their products into the hands of their customers.
The Biera Box was the perfect pivot – if guests couldn’t enjoy their favourite food and beverages inside the restaurant, now they could order them direct to their home.
“The Biera Box was created in the midst of Covid, bringing interesting ingredients and pairing them together,” says Sandford.
Each box features a weekly selection of treats from Biera and Blind Enthusiasm, their sister brewery.
The $65 boxes change weekly, usually housing an assortment of meats and cheeses, a dessert, as well as something cold to wash it all down.
Customers are able to order the box as is. Or, they can add on a series of additional offerings, including a monthly specialty cocktail by Above Average Drinks.
Biera allocates a substantial portion of the box’s proceeds to local charitable organizations and causes each week each week.

Endive Honey Old Fashioned
The current Biera Box features the Honey Endive Old Fashioned, an Above Average take on a familiar favourite.
“For the drink [we used endive] scraps and bits that weren’t bad, they’re just something that isn’t as perfect on the plate,” says Sandford.
“It was an ingredient that the Biera team was using on the menu all the time,” Johnston agrees.
Rather than have the endive scraps wind up in the compost bin, they worked together to char them over Biera’s wood fire.
This helped create a uniquely vegetal, toasty honey infusion that, when paired alongside world-class spirits and liqueurs, creates a sensational drink.
“You end up with a cocktail that’s extremely easy to enjoy at home and doesn’t require the average customer to acquire a collection of hard-to-find bottles,” says Johnston.
The response has been overwhelmingly positive.
“It’s been a really great indication that we’re able to make something that is better than the average cocktail that you might grab off of a shelf,” says Johnston.
“I think Biera and Above Average Drinks work so well together because we’re just on the same wavelength when it comes to quality of ingredients, and consistency of how we’re putting them out and just the creativity behind it all is just really a perfect match for us.”
